READINGTON Taxpayers here have until 9 tonight to cast votes on whether the township may bond $22 million to buy the development rights to Solberg-Hunterdon Airport and roughly 650 acres of open space surrounding the airport.
The special election -- a pivotal moment in what has been decades of controversy surrounding the future of the privately owned airport -- is binding, meaning the township cannot proceed with the bond sale if taxpayers vote it down.
The referendum could set up an eminent domain fight because the Solberg family has said repeatedly that the airport is not for sale.
